73 Years Ago Today: The World’s First Jet Airline Commercial Flight Takes Off

Today – May 2, 2025 – officially marks the 73rd anniversary of the first jet airline commercial flight.

The Comet 1, developed and manufactured by De Havilland paved the way for modern air travel. Following its successful prototype flight in 1949, it was taken on by British airline BOAC, which flew it on the first jet airline commercial flight from London to Johannesburg on May 2, 1952.

While the journey took almost 21 and a half hours, with 5 stops along the way, it still took half the time conventional aircraft of the time would have taken.

These days, you can fly non-stop between London and Joburg in just 11 hours.
