Brownlee prepared to play by June

GILAS Pilipinas coach Tim Cone is confident that naturalized player Justin Brownlee will be ready to resume basketball-related activities by June.

The 6-foot-4 Brownlee sustained a torn ligament on his right thumb in Game 3 of the PBA Season 49 Commissioner's Cup Finals series against TNT in March.

Brownlee, who turned 37 last April 23, managed to play through that badly injured thumb, helping Ginebra take a 3-2 series lead, before eventually falling short when TNT won Games 6 and 7 en route to capturing the Commissioner's Cup crown.

The well-loved Ginebra resident import underwent surgery on his torn thumb days after the title series and is now recovering.

"He should be, yes. He should be ready by late June," Cone said in a short response to The Manila Times' inquiry on Brownlee's status.

Brownlee will have over a month to get himself back into condition by then since the PBA Philippine Cup won't finish until late July.

Cone already said he expects Gilas Pilipinas to only have about a week to prepare, before plunging into action in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 set to start on Aug. 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Gilas Pilipinas is bunched in the same bracket with Oceania basketball powerhouse New Zealand, Taiwan and Iraq in Group D.
