Greece celebrates National Day, 75 years of diplomatic ties with PH

The celebration of Greece's National Day and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations with the Philippines was held at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati. The monumental affair brought together ambassadors, dignitaries, government officials, and close friends for a night of shared history, vibrant culture, and heartfelt connection.

Greek Ambassador to the Philippines Ioannis Pediotis and his wife, Aliki Pappas, reflected on the journey that began in 1947, when Greece first established its Honorary General Consulate in Manila.

"Today, our relationship is that of a warm friendship and close proximity — I would say identical — on all international issues, especially the law of the sea, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and climate change," the ambassador remarked.

Upon arrival, guests were immersed in an event space thoughtfully designed to reflect Greece's cultural identity. The venue, bathed in minimalist elegance, featured white walls accented by shades of blue — the iconic colors of the Greek flag. The deep blue symbolized the vastness of the Greek seas and sky, while the pristine white evoked the purity of foaming waves and the spirit of liberation. Natural plants adorned with "Greek eyes" — believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune — enhanced the atmosphere.

Among recent milestones in the bilateral relationship was the landmark visit of Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo to Athens. There, he met with the Greek prime minister and foreign minister to discuss matters spanning trade, labor, maritime affairs, and defense. Both nations reaffirmed their mutual respect for international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which binds them not only politically but ideologically.

Beyond politics, people-to-people connections breathe life into this diplomatic relationship.

"Our relationship is stronger today not just because of politics, but also because of social connections, thanks to the many thousands of Filipino seafarers employed on Greek ships and many others working in Greece in various fields," Pediotis added.

Moreover, as archipelagic nations, Greece and the Philippines share deep-rooted values: the strength of family, a passion for freedom, and a reverence for tradition. Similarities in pottery techniques, textile patterns, and a shared Christian faith further bind the two cultures.
