Marcy David Sr. celebrates 65th birthday, 30 years as bandleader

Marcy David Sr. celebrated two remarkable milestones last night: his 65th birthday and his 30th year as a bandleader, both honored with a grand thanksgiving event at The Maynila Ballroom in The Manila Hotel.
The venue radiated warmth and joy as it welcomed Marcy's closest family, talented singers he mentored, esteemed colleagues from the music industry, and loyal patrons — those who have supported him throughout the years and played a crucial role in shaping his legacy as one of the country's most sought-after bandleaders and orchestra conductors.
The evening resonated with timeless melodies, featuring performances from past band members whose voices soared to prominence in the music industry. Music legends like Dulce, along with her children, graced the stage, joined by a host of renowned artists. Manila Hotel President and former International Rotary Governor Joey Lina, along with Raffy Garcia, also honored the occasion with a heartfelt performance for Marcy.
Born in Malabon City, Marcy developed a passion for music at a young age, learning piano from his aunt, Flor Ocampo. His love for music flourished during his school years, where he became the official pianist for his high school choir and joined the brass band. Early teaching experiences and hard work allowed him to achieve financial independence, further fueling his decision to pursue a full-time career in music.
David's journey began at the University of the Philippines Diliman before he transferred to the University of Santo Tomas, where he studied under Rev. Fr. Manuel Maramba, OSB. His band's early days started with a performance at a family party and soon gained momentum with the support of Rev. Fr. Elpidio "Boy" Biliran, who helped him secure their first client, the Rotary Club of Malabon. As the band's reputation grew, so did its success. They won multiple awards, including the Rotary Club Malabon Hymn Champion in 1986 and the Gintong Parangal ng Malabon in 2019, and earned international recognition with the Best Entertainment Award from the Department of Tourism in Guangzhou, China.
The event was more than a celebration of time passed; it was a heartfelt reflection of Marcy's musical journey — decades of dedication, passion, and hard work that brought him to the pinnacle of his career. Stories shared throughout the night highlighted the relationships built, the music that had touched countless lives, and the continued success that has kept him at the forefront of the industry for more than three decades. It was a tribute to his enduring talent, deep contribution to the musical landscape, and the profound respect he has earned from all who have had the privilege of working with him.
