Matadi Gateway Terminal expands infrastructure to boost efficiency

MATADI Gateway Terminal (MGT), operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is implementing infrastructure developments to improve operational efficiency and meet customer demand.
A key project is the construction of a 2.65-kilometer access road linking the Port of Matadi to the Kinkanda traffic circle via SEP (Services des Entreprises Pétrolières) Congo and RN (Route Nationale) 14. The project includes 906 meters of new road and the rehabilitation of 1,746 meters of existing infrastructure. The first phase, a 1.75-kilometer stretch between the Kinkanda traffic circle and Entrée SEP, was completed in June last year. The second phase, which started in February 2025, will extend eastward from MGT to the RN14-SEP Congo entrance.
MGT is expanding its storage yard to maximize capacity to accommodate increasing cargo volumes. The improved road network and yard expansion aim to facilitate cargo movement, reduce container dwell times, and ease congestion in western Matadi, benefiting trucking companies and port users.
MGT is also enlarging its parking area for clients and stakeholders and constructing a pedestrian walkway to enhance safety. These developments are part of the terminal's broader strategy to improve accessibility and operational flow.
MGT's development projects are expected to create indirect employment opportunities in Matadi. The terminal continues to focus on efficiency and infrastructure improvements to support trade in the DRC, reinforcing its role in the country's logistics network.
ICTSI entered a joint venture with La Société De Gestion Immobilière Lengo (SIMOBILE) in January 2014 to develop a container and general cargo terminal along the Congo River in Matadi. The joint venture company, Matadi Gateway Terminal, operates and manages the facility on land designated for port use in the district of Mbengu, Township of Matadi in the DRC.
