Thunder too loud for Titans in Breakout League

TAROUBA, Trinidad (CMC) — Anderson Mahase snared three wickets and Captain Karima Gore played a responsible knock to carry the Leeward Islands Thunder past the Jamaica Titans by six wickets when the West Indies Breakout League continued here on Saturday.

Left-arm spinner Mahase took 3-16 from four miserly overs as the Titans were restricted to 123 for six from their 20 overs after they chose to bat first at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

Jordan Johnson topscored with 40 and Kirk McKenzie made 34 to put the Titans in a good position to post a competitive total after they were poised at 76 for two in the 12th over.

But Mahase took two wickets in consecutive balls to ensure they were no fireworks at the death, as the Titans limped to their eventual total.

Skipper Gore then scored an unbeaten 34 from 31 balls, while Giovonte Depeiza finished on 17 not out, with the two guiding their team to victory in an unbroken 46-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Earlier, openers Kofi James and Jamie Cornelius gave the Thunder a solid start in their run chase, posting 64 runs for the first wicket in under six overs.

James was the first to go for the top score of 39 from 20 balls when he was dismissed by Jeavor Royal, and Mikyle Louis only faced two balls before Royal also claimed his wicket for a duck.

The Thunder slipped to 68 for three when Cornelius fell to the offspin of Raamal Lewis for 16, with the same bowler also dismissing Jewel Andrew for 11 to leave the score 81 for four at the end of nine overs.

However, Gore and Depeiza ensured there would be no middle order collapse as they batted sensibly to avoid any further scares.

Royal took 2-14, while Lewis grabbed 2-15.
